All hail velvet. Decadent and sumptuous, the luxe fabrication has reappeared for the new season, making it mark on both the runways and out on the street. Whether you’re a long-time advocate of the trend or want to wear it for the first time, get inspired with the best velvet street style looks from bloggers Joey Taylor from Northern Magpie and Ella Gregory from Coco’s Tea Party, as seen at London Fashion Week SS18.
Joey Taylor of Northern Magpie
Joey proved there was more than one way to wear the trend with a plush paisley jacket and a black lace-trim cami, both crafted from velvet in dark, inky hues. Styling her look with a pair of light-wash boyfriend jeans, the blogger played with tone and colour, opting for a wine-hued velvet bag and block heeled sandals in lavish emerald green.
Joey says: “I picked out these pieces as they fit with my style and with my current denim obsession. Plus the jewels colours are key for autumn and winter so accessorising with rich colours such as purples and greens are key for the new season. I am also enjoying mixing casual pieces with tailoring items, so the blazer was a fun and key piece that pulled the look together.”
Ella Gregory of Coco’s Tea Party
Ella combined the fabric du jour with glamourous sparkles, layering an embellished black velvet jacket over a simple top, skinny jeans and block-heeled ankle boots. She complemented the star-strewn cover-up with a gold sequin beret, finishing her look with a velvet across-body bag, also in black.
Ella says: “I like to be comfortable during London Fashion Week as the days are long and you’re constantly on your feet. This beaded, velvet jacket is such a spectacular, stand-out piece, and really elevates a basic pair of skinny jeans and a cotton tee. It allows me to dress casually, whilst still looking polished. And the sequin beret gives the look a playful, bold twist – ideal for Fashion Week!”
