Celebrating traditional hand-craft techniques passed down through generations, the ARTISAN collection at Monsoon showcases beautiful, limited edition pieces with a story to tell. Here we meet Shamshool, one of the talented artisans behind the embellished Petunia dress.
The Petunia Dress
Hand embellished with a stunning peacock and beautiful flowers, our Petunia dress is an alluring style for any special occasion. Cut for a flattering midi length, this showstopping style has a delicate mesh layer and full lining, and is detailed with a belt at the waist for a form-flattering finish.
Meet the Artisan
Shamshool Hassan, has been working as an embellishment artisan for 15 years. He learnt handwork when he was 19 and after practicing it for a year and a half he started working in one of the embellishment units in his hometown of Bareilly. Since then Shamshool has worked with various factories in Bareilly and Delhi.
Shamshool has been married to Parveen Bi for 15 years and has two children – Gauhar, 12, and Mohammed Mehraj, 6, whom he misses much whilst he lives in Delhi to work. He usually works in Delhi for 3 months and goes back to his family in his hometown for a month long break. He likes to spend his time staying in with his family and socialising with friends and relatives.
The ARTISAN Collection
Working with craftspeople in faraway places is a complex process with lots of challenges. But it’s always been an important part of who we are and what we do. Our continued commitment to using hand-craft helps sustain skills and livelihoods, as well as adding something special and unique to our collections.
A member of our Monsoon team personally visits our artisans, to watch our beautiful product come to life and get to know the people behind the intricate craftsmanship. We’ve worked closely with our ARTISAN suppliers to introduce worker handbooks where artisans can track the number of pieces they’ve worked on and, in turn, keep a record of their wages. This helps create transparency in the supply chain, letting us know who is making our clothes, and allowing us to make sure that the artisans have been fully paid for their beautiful work.
